RECOMMENDED READING: SPAIN 1969
“In the spring of 1969 on the outskirts of Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol in Spain, a young photographer, Paul Carter, came across a small blue van. It was home to the Whitfield family who were passing through on their journey around Europe. Over a few days he took photos of the family, the local people living and working around them, the tourists and the new high rise apartments.”
A little recommended reading! “A Moment in Time – Spain 1969” is a book by photographer Paul Carter. Through fantastic images, the book tells the story of when he met an English family, the Whitfields. The reason this book first caught our attention is that Mason, the youngest out of the three children is a good friend of Roy’s. In 1969 the family was living in a van on the edge of a building site near the sea in Torremolinos which was a short bus ride from Malaga in southern Spain. They had been on the road for two years and had stopped in Torremolinos to earn some cash before continuing their travels. Carter started photographing their daily life as well as the tourists, locals, and the building sites that were fast transforming the old fishing village.
Apart from the beautiful photos, you can also read what each member of the family remembers about the time spent in Spain and the full story of how Paul Carter first met the family.
The book is available to buy here on Amazon and will soon also hopefully be available to purchase from our Earlham St store.
