ANTWERP SIX

Forty years ago, six young designers climbed into a van, drove to London and changed the course of contemporary fashion.

As soon as MoMu announced the new Antwerp Six exhibition, we knew we had to check it out, and we were not disappointed! The exhibition is not just a celebration of six designers, it’s a reminder that the most influential ideas often begin on the margins.

If you’re interested in fashion history, this is a rare opportunity to see the work of Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene, and Marina Yee brought together in a single exhibition for the first time. This excellent show traces their journey from students at Antwerp’s Royal Academy to designers who challenged the conventions of Paris and Milan and helped establish Antwerp as one of the world’s great fashion cities.

At The Vintage Showroom, exhibitions like this are a reminder that great design isn’t born from following trends. It comes from curiosity, individuality and a deep understanding of culture, craft and clothing. We are lucky enough to have met and worked with a number of the Six and their teams over the years, and after visiting the MoMu, we left with an even greater sense of respect for their work.

The permanent fashion exhibition at MoMu, which stands alone, is worth a visit in its own right and is beautifully executed by the curatorial team.

We are going easy on the spoilers, but Walter Van Beirendonck talking to a digital totem of an early sketch of his had to be a highlight for us!

If you’re planning a trip to Antwerp, make time for this exhibition. It’s more than a retrospective; it is a lesson in why originality still matters. The Antwerp 6 exhibition at the MoMu runs until January 17 2027.
